Eva Lys looks to make more history on Monday at the Australian Open after becoming the first lucky loser at the event to make the fourth round Saturday. Lys will face off against the second ranked women’s player Iga Swiatek with the chance to become the first lucky loser to make the quarterfinals of any Grand Slam event.

The 23-year-old German was prepared to head home after losing int the final round of qualification before a late tournament withdrawal by Anna Kalinskaya opened up a spot in the main draw.

With just ten minutes of preparation Lys was dropped into a first round match against Australian Kimberly Birrell. The lack of time to prepare did not seem to faze the young German as she cruised to a 6-2 6-2 straight sets victory.

Ranked 128th coming into the tournament, Lys will be climbing the tour rankings and going home with a significantly greater amount of money from her tournament run. This marks the deepest run in any Grand Slam for the young German beating her previous best at the US Open making the second round.

Lys joins a list with five others who have come from losing in qualification to making the fourth round of a major tournament as a lucky loser. If she can pull off the incredible upset Monday, she will cement herself in the record books as the first lucky loser to get to a Grand Slam quarterfinal.
